Douglas Towne

While the Phoenix population figure has skyrocketed since the photo was taken in 1974, the unique window to view the former Papago-Saguaro National Monument has remained relatively unchanged for the last 20 million years or so. Hole-in-the-Rock is an opening through Papago Park's red hills that has transitioned from a guide to the seasons in ancient times to a popular selfie spot for visitors.

In the May/June issue of Arizona Contractor & Community Magazine, we cover the history of this natural playground, including the creation of its zoo, national guard arsenal, botanical garden, golf course, and the adjacent Rock Park. In this short-lived tourist attraction, customers rode a train to view miniature castles built using spectacular rocks and minerals.
