McCarthy Building Companies Inc. is pleased to announce that Mike Gonzalez, vice president with McCarthy Southwest region’s education building group, has been awarded a 2020 Distinguished Leadership Award by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). He is being honored at the virtual 2020 Design-Build Conference and Expo on Oct. 30.

Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) is a membership organization founded to advocate and advance single-source project delivery within the design and construction community. The design-build method of project delivery embraces architecture, engineering and construction services under a single contract, thereby reintegrating the roles of designer and constructor. In addition to public- and private-sector project owners, DBIA members include practitioners from all project phases.
“Mike has a very entrepreneurial leadership style, blended with a strong technical background,” said Justin Kelton, president of McCarthy Building Companies’ Southwest region. “He is an outstanding mentor committed to the next generation of industry professionals, and he is passionate about the design-build process and its numerous benefits for all team members.”
Gonzalez has nearly three decades of construction experience managing design-build, design-assist and traditional construction projects servicing multiple industries, including life science, infrastructure, manufacturing, industrial, power, hospitality, healthcare, high technology and higher education. He has guided more than $805 million in design-build projects to date.
Under Gonzalez’s leadership as chair of the Arizona chapter of DBIA (a role that he assumed in January 2019), the chapter has:
Developed an active core group with cross-discipline representation that includes owners, design professionals, contractors, and trade partners
Rekindled the connection to students with stimulating programs; all three state universities have an active and recognized student chapter
Challenged the education curriculum ensuring it is relevant and adds value
Achieved 2020 certification attendance that was the largest ever held in Arizona
Proceeded to start a Young Professional chapter and explore an Owner’s Council
Gonzalez earned a bachelor’s degree in construction management from Arizona State University. He retired as a colonel in the United States Army after 30 years of service where he served honorably in both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
He holds key positions on numerous external boards and associations, including the Industry Executive Committee for the ASU Del E. Webb School of Construction, chair of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Arizona Chapter, board member of DBIA Western Pacific Region, Proposal Review committee member for the Society of College and University Planning, and board member of the Maricopa Community College Foundation.
In addition, he holds LEED accreditation from the United States Green Building Council and certification as a DBIA Designated Design-Build Professional™ from the Design Build Institute of America.
